Every gemstone begins with people. Our partnership with Gem Legacy helps support education, entrepreneurship, safer tools, and lasting opportunities within East African artisanal gem-mining communities.

From Mine to Market
The People Behind the Gemstones
Gemstones connect many hands and communities before they become part of a finished piece of jewelry. Gem Legacy works alongside East African mining communities to provide practical resources that help miners, students, and families build safer and more sustainable futures.
Expressions Jewelers supports this work because we believe our responsibility to the jewelry industry extends beyond the pieces in our cases. Our clients’ continued patronage helps make that support possible.
It is one way we can honor both the beauty of gemstones and the people whose knowledge, labor, and skill bring them into the world.
Building Futures Together

A Firsthand Experience
Our 2022 Journey
In July 2022, Mary and Karen traveled with Gem Legacy Adventures through Tanzania and Kenya. They visited tanzanite, garnet, tourmaline, and ruby-mining communities and helped deliver new tools to miners who take great pride in their work.
Meeting the people at the beginning of a gemstone’s journey gave us a deeper understanding of both the skill involved and the challenges faced by artisanal mining communities.
It also made the connection between our industry and these communities more immediate and personal—something we continue to carry with us in our work.

Investing in Education
Kitarini Primary School
Mary and Karen also spent time at Kitarini Primary School, which serves children from Maasai ruby-mining families. The students’ enthusiasm for learning—and their generous welcome—were among the most memorable parts of the journey.
Gem Legacy’s educational initiatives help students remain in school and pursue opportunities that can strengthen their families and communities for years to come.
