Diamond Education in Davenport, Iowa
Cut, color, clarity, and carat weight are the internationally recognized standards used to describe a diamond’s quality and characteristics. At Expressions Jewelers in Davenport, our GIA-trained team helps clients throughout the Quad Cities understand how the 4Cs influence beauty, rarity, and value, and how to find the balance that feels right for them.
01 / Cut
How a Diamond Interacts With Light
Cut is not the same thing as diamond shape.
Cut describes how effectively a diamond’s proportions, symmetry, and polish work together to return light. A well-cut diamond can appear bright, lively, and full of contrast.
GIA assigns an overall cut grade to standard round brilliant diamonds. Fancy shapes, including oval, pear, emerald, and cushion cuts, are evaluated using their proportions, light performance, symmetry, polish, and overall visual appeal.

02 / Color
The Presence (or Absence) of Color
Less color generally receives a higher grade.
For diamonds in the traditional colorless-to-light-yellow range, the GIA scale begins at D, representing colorless, and continues through Z, representing light yellow or brown.
Color differences can be subtle. A diamond’s shape, size, setting style, and metal color can all influence how its body color appears once the jewelry is finished.

03 / Clarity
A Diamond’s Natural Characteristics
Clarity is evaluated under controlled conditions and magnification.
Clarity describes features inside a diamond, called inclusions, and features on its surface, called blemishes. These may include crystals, feathers, clouds, or growth patterns.
A clarity grade considers the number, size, type, position, and visibility of these characteristics. Many inclusions are difficult or impossible to see without magnification, so the highest clarity grade is not always necessary for a beautiful diamond.

04 / Carat Weight
A Measure of Weight, Not Size
One carat equals 0.20 gram.
Carat describes a diamond’s weight rather than its visible dimensions. Two diamonds with the same carat weight can look noticeably different in size depending on their shape, proportions, and how their weight is distributed.
Measurements matter alongside carat weight. Elongated shapes may appear larger from the top, while deeper diamonds can carry more of their weight below the setting.

The Complete Picture
The 4Cs Work Together
No single grade tells you whether a diamond is right for you. Two diamonds with similar reports may look different in person, and the qualities worth prioritizing depend on your preferences, design, and budget.
We use the 4Cs as a starting point, then help you look beyond the paper to compare beauty, personality, and value with your own eyes.
Beyond the Grading Report
Choosing a Diamond in the Quad Cities
A grading report gives you important information, but it cannot show exactly how a diamond will look to your eyes. Comparing diamonds in person helps you recognize which differences matter to you and where you may prefer to invest your budget.
Compare Side by Side
